Pininfarina and Hybrid Kinetic Group reveal two EV SUVs

Pininfarina and Chinese car company Hybrid Kinetic Group have showcased three concepts at the Shanghai motor show; the K550 and K750 SUVs, and the H600 saloon.

All three, which feature derivatives of the same aesthetic, feature micro-turbine generator range extenders with 50,000-hour lifespans and 621-mile-range battery packs, with 50,000-charge-cycle lifespans.

The partnership of the two companies culminates from a £54million deal between the two companies which spans just under four years.

The company claims that the turbine generator range extenders do away with the cars’ need for charging stations, and the key to the batteries’ high capacity and subsequently high range potential is their high energy density and charge potential. Over 800bhp from the electric motors is claimed, while the turbine technology is a similar to that used in the Jaguar C-X75 concept. While the saloon takes 2.9sec to reach 60mph, the SUVs are likely to take longer, due to their extra heft. 

Hybrid Kinetic Group CEO Xu Jianguo also took a swipe at the Chinese car industry’s copycat car culture, saying: “We are dedicated to the development of luxury clean energy vehicles with full intellectual property rights. Our endeavour pushed the development of Chinese automobile industry, benefits the people, ushers in a sustainable future, and helps create a more harmonious society.”

Aesthetically, the cars are similar to one another, with only the body styles distinguishing the different models; the K550 being a five-seat SUV, and the K750 being a seven-seat SUV akin to the Range Rover.
